AWD vs 4WD Hi

2021 Denali 1500 with the 3.0L diesel. Owner's manual isn't really clear. Manual states all 4 wheels are powered. Is AWD mode just enhanced traction control? If so, if you hit a sheet of ice or mud, does it actually switch to 4WD? I don't really have a way to play around and see what really happens.
 
AWD is basically part-time 4x4. When it senses slip in the rear wheels, it engages the front wheels in what I call the slip/bang system. The disadvantage of leaving it in AWD is that it keeps the front wheels locked to the diff so some loss in MPG and extra wear and tear. I never use it. I use 4hi when I need it otherwise I leave it in 2hi.
