So there are a lot of people out there that seem to have a variety of issues from rear main leaks to long crank issues and a few things in-between. I was told once that bad news travels at the speed of light and good or no news tends to stays unreported. So the bad news has me a bit nervous but so far I love this engine and transmission. Is that the consensus here or do some of you have the same concerns?

I have some ‘concerns’ with long term durability (powertrain is new and has not been proven) but so far after 20,000 miles I’m very happy and have had ZERO issues (knock on wood!) with mine.

Are you guys aware of a issue with the 3.0L I6 diesel in the GM’s that will cost you almost 8 grand if it happens to your truck

Good morning all, just a little info for all you 3.0L I6 Diesel Engine folks to think about. I have a 2020 GMC LTZ Sierra with the 3.0L I6 diesel engine, 108000 miles, when I purchased the truck it has 82000. The check engine lite came on the other day and I checked for codes, P0016, when your powertrain control module detects that your crankshaft and camshaft are out of time.
Cleared the code, and it came back after 7 miles, long story short, took it in the GM dealership and three days later they tell me that it will cost $7800.00 to repair the truck, GM will not help pay for the repair, no recalls, also no parts available, nationwide back order and its the 4th truck they have had in this year for this problem.
Now I like my truck, but if someone had told me that around 100000 miles I would have to spend almost 8 gran on it to replace timing chain and sprockets and Im not sure what else, I might have reconsidered, also I have asked them to change the oil pump belt while they have it apart, no use having to take it apart again in 42000 to replace that.
Not sure how many trucks out there have this issue or going to have this issue, but it’s a costly repair that I wasn't prepared for.
PS: the labor for this repair is 40 hours!

UpDate: Truck has been setting for 2 months waiting on parts!
Watch this video from The RV Connection on YouTube.com, What you don't know about the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel, GM engineer stats in the video that parts that my truck is waiting for will never need any attention! BS
Also my son in law truck a 2020 GMC Sierra with 38000 miles has a P06DD code, Engine Oil Pressure Control, took it to the Dealer were my truck is setting, they tell him its a sensor under the valve cover failed, it is under Warranty and there is a bulletin out for know issue, parts are under National back order, 14 hr to repair.

So if you are going to keep this truck, for a long time, you better get a extended warranty, keep all maintenance records, because you will need them to prove that you didn't cause the issue with your truck, I have a Endurance warranty and it was one of the first things they ask for after I filed a claim with them.

You may never have any issues, but if you do it's going to cost you a lot of cast to repair!

If anyone is interested I have 7 qrts oil and an oil filter. I traded in my 2021 GMC Elevation 3.0 before giving it the oil change so I will give it to anyone that wants it contact me at [email protected]

Truck is still waiting for parts, the dealership is now telling me that they have 4 trucks waiting for parts for the same repair, 3000 trucks in the US waiting for the parts! Yet GM keeps selling these trucks and can’t provide parts, and the dealership offered to buy my truck for $25 thousand, what a joke.

Marvin, you are not alone. I'll start by saying I do love this 2020 Chev 1500 RST with the 3.0 litre Diesel. At 46,000 km my torque converter blew into the transmission. Rather than trying to find parts for the transmission during the part shortage of 2021, GM opted to replace the transmission completely. I was happy with that. Fast forward to 205,000 km, and my engine light began to come on periodically. P0016 cam position sensor. This is 5,000 km past my extended warranty. After a few hours of chasing wires and looking for chaffing, it was decided the next and only course of action was to replace the timing chain. The dealership has offered for me to drive the truck while I wait for the parts. I've chosen not to use it after seeing various tear-downs of this motor with valves slamming the pistons. The truck has been parked at the dealership since November.
GM Canada has 'assured' me that this will fix the issue. Of the two pages of parts, all have been received except 4, including the timing chain tensioner.
Marvin, have you received all the parts, and is the job completed? Are you happy with it?

52K just had the front crank seal replaced under warranty. They also resealed the block plug up front for me when they were inside. Replaced the coolant and recharged the AC too. Pretty happy with the dealer,4 day turnaround.
